Why Does PCIT Work?

Parent Child Interaction Therapy, or PCIT, works because it’s different. While it draws on a variety of therapies and theories (such as play therapy, behavioral parent training, social learning theory, attachment theory), PCIT is unique. It is unique in that you, the caregiver(s), are the one directly interacting with your child for a majority of the session, not the therapist.

So now you may be wondering, “if I’m the one working with my child, why am I paying for this?”

While you are the one mainly interacting with your child, you are receiving real time coaching from a certified therapist via an earpiece. This coaching is invaluable. Instead of coming to meet with a therapist and learning different techniques or getting various handouts then going back to try and figure it out in a real life setting, you are practicing these techniques in session with your child all while receiving coaching and support from your therapist. Not only will it be easier for you to put theory to practice, but by working directly with your child in therapy, the child has an easier time transferring what they learn in session to the world outside of our office. In addition, PCIT strengthens your bond with your child to create a positive experience for both you and your child.

PCIT is not some fad form of therapy. It was developed in the early 1970s and is an evidence based treatment proven to equip both parent and child with skills necessary to elicit lasting results. These results can include, but are not limited to, increased attention span, better behavior in public, and an increase in overall compliance. PCIT can contribute to more confidence and calmness for both the parent and the child.
