What is PCIT?

PCIT or Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is an evidenced-based treatment for young children with behavioral problems and their parents or caregivers. PCIT focuses on promoting positive parent-child relationships and teaching parents effective skills to manage their child’s behavior. The in-the-moment parent coaching that occurs during PCIT sets it apart from other therapeutic modalities.

PCIT is completed in two treatment phases. The first phase focuses on establishing connection and warmth in the parent’s relationship with their child. The skills learned in the first phase help the child feel good about themselves and secure in their relationship with their parent. The second phase of treatment focuses on helping parents or caregivers manage their child’s behaviors with confidence and consistency. The skills learned in the second phase help the parent learn strategies to help their child comply with directions, respect house rules, accept limits, and demonstrate appropriate behavior in public.

PCIT is completed in approximately 12 to 20 sessions. During those sessions, the child and parent are in a playroom while the therapist is in an observation room watching the family interact through a one-way mirror. The parent or caregiver wears an ear bud through which the therapist provides in-the-moment coaching to help the parent work on skills with their child. Parents are encouraged to practice their new skills at home with their child during a designated special play time.
